About BHI

The Business of Hockey Institute (BHI) is a non-profit think tank dedicated to improving the business models of professional and amateur hockey organizations. BHI’s Board of Directors is comprised of highly accomplished hockey minds who share years of experience in all facets of the business and have identified the need for hockey-focused education.

BHI has developed a business of hockey curriculum in consultation with hockey industry leaders and its academic partner, Athabasca University. This curriculum is specifically designed to provide current and aspiring managers in the industry with a skillset that allows them to excel in hockey-related roles and to address the unique challenges that exist within the business of hockey.

BHI offers students a learning experience like no other in the world. The Certified Hockey Professional designation is the first-ever accreditation in hockey management, offering students the opportunity to develop a comprehensive understanding of hockey business, while engaging and connecting with top hockey insiders and executives. This includes access to BHI board members, as well as attendance at select hockey events such as the NHL Entry Draft.

In 2016, John McDonough, President and CEO of the Chicago Blackhawks, was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the business of hockey through the awarding of the first ever honorary Certified Hockey Professional (CHP) designation.

Under John’s leadership, the Blackhawks have been one of the most successful in the NHL both on and off the ice. Forbes Magazine has called John’s leadership in revitalizing the team and resurrecting its fan base, “the greatest sports-business turnaround ever.” In 2014, the Blackhawks were recognized as the “Best Franchise” by The Hockey News, and the momentum has carried on with the Blackhawks most recent Stanley Cup win in 2015. Peter Luukko, CHP

In 2017, Peter Luukko, Alternate Governor of the Florida Panthers and Co-Chairman of the Oak View Group, was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the business of hockey through the awarding of the honorary Certified Hockey Professional (CHP) designation.

Prior to joining the Panthers, Peter was the President and Chief Operating Officer of Comcast-Spectacor, L.P. where he oversaw all operations of the Philadelphia Flyers. During his 25-year tenure with Comcast-Spectacor, Peter led the company’s facility-management business, growing it from seven facilities to over 125, helped the City of Philadelphia solidify itself as an American sports mecca by attract numerous preeminent sports and entertainment events, and was instrumental in the Flyers hosting a NHL Winter Classic and the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Peter’s accomplishments in sports and facility management have led to distinct recognition from the University of Massachusetts, the City of Philadelphia and the sports and entertainment industry at large. Mark Chipman, CHP

Winnipeg Jets

In 2018, Mark Chipman, Executive Chairman and Governor of True North Sports + Entertainment and the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club, was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the business of hockey through the awarding of the honorary Certified Hockey Professional (CHP) designation.

For over two decades, Chipman has been integral in establishing and maintaining professional hockey in his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Chipman led True North’s successful relocation of the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg as the Jets in 2011, brought the AHL and Manitoba Moose back to Winnipeg as the Jets’ AHL affiliate in 2015, and developed a state of the art hockey development hub with the opening of the Bell MTS Iceplex in 2010.  Further information on Mark’s accolades, awards, and honors can be found here.

Brett Barnes works as an associate and player agent for RWG Sport Management, an agency that represents junior and professional hockey players. With RWG, Brett assists with the negotiations and execution of standard player contracts for players in National Hockey League (NHL), American Hockey League (AHL), and East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). In addition to his role with RWG, Brett is a Territory Account Manager with Nike Golf. His prior experience includes working as a Sales Manager for a hockey equipment manufacturer and as a referee for Hockey Canada. Brett received his MBA in Hockey Management and the CHP designation in 2018.

Keith Fong, MBA, CHP

Keith’s involvement in hockey started in 1999 when he moved to Hong Kong to work for Asiasports Ltd. and organize a hockey tournament featuring Gordie Howe. Since then, Keith has been committed to growing the game in Asia and organized tournaments in Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, and Indonesia. He was appointed the Project Lead for the Montreal Canadiens Alumni visit to Beijing in 2016 and also Co-founded SWOT Hockey Limited, a company that develops and markets licensed hockey equipment, and organizes leagues, tournaments, and clinics throughout Asia. Keith completed his MBA at Western University and received his CHP designation in 2018.

Patrick Garland, MBA, CHP

Edmonton Oilers

Patrick has worked at the highest level of hockey for over a decade. He has worked for the Edmonton Oilers in various capacities in both hockey operations and the business side of the organization.  His roles with the Oilers have included Coordinator, Communications and Team Services; Manager, Team Services; and most recently, Program Director, Hockey Engagement. Prior to joining the Edmonton Oilers, Pat also worked for Hockey Canada as a Coordinator, where his responsibilities included working as a video coach for Team Canada at the 2004 Hungarian Cup and tracking statistics for all Canadians playing professional hockey in Europe. Pat received his MBA in Hockey Management and CHP designation in 2018, and also holds a Sports Administration Diploma from Mount Royal University.

Earl Jessiman, MA, MBA, CHP
Independent Sports Writer

Earl has over 35 years of experience as a coach and manager to elite athletes, financial advisors, and high net worth clients. After playing varsity hockey for the University of Pennsylvania, Earl transitioned into coaching and management. He began his career off the ice in the CIAU, where he served as an assistant coach for Dalhousie University and Western University, before becoming the Head Coach of Brandon University. After his university coaching career, Earl made his mark in the AHL and the Western Hockey League (WHL), serving as the Head Coach/General Manager for the Fredericton Express (farm team of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks), and the Head Coach/Assistant General Manager for the Lethbridge Broncos.  Earl has most recently worked in the financial services sector as an Investment Advisor. He received his MBA in Hockey Management and CHP designation in 2018, and also holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and French from the University of Pennsylvania, a Bachelor of Physical Education from Dalhousie University, and a Masters of Arts in Coaching from the University of Western Ontario.
