BHI exists to improve the economic viability of professional and amateur hockey through education, research, consulting, and advocacy.

HISTORY

The origins of BHI can be traced back to at least 2010 when a group of hockey executives first started discussing what to do about the managerial challenges confronting hockey organizations. Their motivation was ensuring hockey would thrive at both the professional and amateur levels.

Those involved were aware of the fact that the popularity of professional hockey was being limited, if not eroded by, the popularity of other sports and entertainment options. They also recognized that the quality of professional hockey depended on the success of amateur hockey and amateur hockey registrations. Registrations were, however, being eroded by rising costs, aging infrastructure, and safety concerns. These circumstances suggested that hockey’s future as a global business enterprise could not be taken for granted.

In order to meet the challenges facing hockey, a commitment was made to establish a non-profit “think tank” dedicated to improving the economics of hockey through education, research, consulting, and advocacy. As part of its educational mandate, this “think tank” would develop courses and, most importantly, would establish an educational credential — the Certified Hockey Professional (CHP) — that would clearly identify individuals with both experience and formal training in the business of hockey.

In 2013, Athabasca University (AU) agreed to be BHI’s exclusive academic partner. AU is a pioneer in the world of online education. In 1994, it became the first university in the world to offer an online Executive MBA.

BHI was formally incorporated at the end of 2014. In January 2015, Athabasca University announced the world’s first Executive MBA program specifically focused on the business of hockey.
