Brett Barnes, one of four BHI graduates that was recently conferred the Certified Hockey Professional (CHP) designation, has been intimately involved with hockey from an early age. He started playing when he was six, refereed from 12 through his 20s, and eventually went on to work as an equipment salesman.  More recently, Brett leveraged his experience and passion for the game and joined player agency, RWG Sport Management, as an Associate.

As the Account Manager at SC Agencies Ltd., Brett was responsible for retail and corporate sales for several high-end hockey equipment manufacturers including Vaughn Custom Sports, Eagle Hockey, Graf Canada Ltd., Sauce Hockey, and Force Sports. He was eventually promoted to Sales Manager where he supervised territory sales managers, and had the opportunity to negotiate retail purchase programs, create and maintain endorsement contracts, and manage inventories.

In 2014, Brett took the initiative and pursued Ross Gurney, president of R.W.G. Sport Management, seeking an opportunity in the player representation business. Gurney, who was impressed with Brett’s experience, created a position for Brett, hiring him as an Associate. A year later, Gurney supported Brett’s decision to pursue graduate level education with BHI:

“Brett is such a valuable member of our group. When he approached me about his decision to pursue his CHP I was thrilled for him. It aligned with what I knew to be in his character. A thirst for new knowledge and self improvement all in an effort to better assist our clients as we navigate through the business of hockey.”

Brett’s primary responsibilities with R.W.G. include scouting, prospect identification, pitching, servicing, general player client management, and acting as a client intermediary with Bantam, Midget, BCHL, NCAA, and WHL Clubs. In his fourth year with the organization, Brett is now managing all CHL contracts, NCAA national letters of intent, and contracts with European leagues. He also conducts annual summer development camps on behalf of R.W.G. where he manages the coaches, venue, and guest speakers.

Now having received his CHP, joining a group that includes honorary CHPs, John McDonough, President of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Peter Luukko, Alternate Governor of the Florida Panthers, Brett is looking to continue his success as a player agent and grow R.W.G.’s business further:

“The CHP program offered by AU and BHI was appealing to me from the outset as nothing remotely comparable was being offered anywhere else. The hockey-specific content in addition to more traditional Executive MBA classes provided the ideal blend of practical and theoretical content to provide a well-rounded educational experience. I am very proud to be one of the first to receive the CHP designation and look forward to applying these new and refined skills to my professional journey within the hockey industry.

While enrolled in the CHP program over the past two years, Brett worked tirelessly to complete an intensive curriculum while working two jobs. He interacted with numerous executives at all levels of the game and worked directly with CHL franchises as part of the BHI curriculum.

BHI is proud to have Brett as an alumni and CHP looks forward to his continued success.
