In 2015, Chartered Accountant (CA), Nathan MacDonald, decided to pursue BHI’s MBA in Hockey Management and the Certified Hockey Professional (CHP) designation in hopes of seeking out a senior management opportunity in the game. Now, within months after officially graduating from the program, Nathan has been hired as the Director of Business Operations for Western Hockey League franchise, Swift Current Broncos.

Prior to accepting his new role with the Broncos, Nathan earned his CA designation in 2011 and accumulated ten years of experience in public accounting and assurance with two national accounting firms. Most recently, Nathan served as a Manager at Crowe MacKay LLP, where he led various audit and review engagements, while managing numerous other annual engagements including being the business development and recruitment lead for the firm’s Calgary office.

During the CHP program, Nathan learned from professors with extensive research experience at the CHL level, had the invaluable opportunity of working directly with a CHL franchises as part of the BHI curriculum, and networked with various hockey executives at three NHL drafts. Nathan feels that the CHP program played an integral role in providing him with the skillset needed to obtain and excel in his new role:

“The Executive MBA and CHP program helped me connect my professional experience in assurance to the business of hockey, while also improving my general business management experience. The hockey specific courses were diverse and comprehensive, and not only enhanced my understanding of the business of hockey, but will also allow me to bring this education directly into the organization and apply exclusive sport and hockey specific education to the organization. The MBA in Hockey Management and the CHP program have increased my ability to have a positive impact on the Swift Current Broncos organization and the Swift Current community.”

Chairman of the Broncos’ Board of Directors, Trent McCLeary, spoke highly of Nathan’s qualifications and confirmed that Nathan’s training in the CHP program was an important factor in the Broncos deciding that he was the right individual for the job:

“We are thrilled to have Nathan MacDonald as our new Director of Business Operations. Nathan’s accounting experience, and his hockey-focused business education, made him the perfect candidate. As a Chartered Accountant, he has the skills and capability to oversee the financial and accounting aspects of our organization, and as a graduate of BHI’s CHP program, he has the training to effectively and efficiently improve our business operations within a hockey environment that has a unique set of challenges.”

Going forward, Nathan will lead the Broncos’ off ice team and look to contribute to the strategic agenda of the organization by providing insight and leading initiatives that improve and advance the position of the franchise, the Broncos’ staff and volunteers, and the community.
